Shelagh Willet’s tombstone unveiling

The programme for the unveiling of Shelagh Willet's tombstone.

The programme for the unveiling of Shelagh Willet’s tombstone.

Today there was a short service in the graveyard in Gabane for the Unveiling of Shelagh’s tombstone. Sebastian Okello-Wengi organised it and provided the stone. It has been very important to him and he has been planning it since her funeral.

There was quiet singing of Kumbaya, then a Lutheran pastor who I didn’t know blessed the stone. Frank and Ted Hutton removed the covering cloth. Then Joyce, a dear friend of Shelagh’s now living in America, read the simple inscription, and placed flowers on the stone. In the absence of the chief, Frank spoke for a couple of minutes emphasising the witness in Shelagh’s life to Jesus direction to us to love our neighbour. Ted Hutton’s two girls read a poem of Shelagh’s sent by Betty in America. After more singing we left for Kagisong and tea with lots of talk!

There were at least 3 ex- refugees there, it was very moving that inscribed on Shelagh’s stone is Mother of refugees. She was that to many people. Otherwise there is just her name and dates of birth, death and burial.

Hiroshima Day, Saturday 6th August 2016

Never again

On this day in 1945, at 8:16 a.m. Japanese time, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb, over the city of Hiroshima. Approximately 80,000 people are killed as a direct result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least another 60,000 would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout.

Launch of Xenowatch – Wednesday 10 August 2016

Xenowatch

The African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS), iAfrikan, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees cordially invite you to the launch of Xenowatch, a newly-created platform to monitor xenophobic threats and violence across South Africa.

Over the past decade, around 150,000 people have been killed, injured, or displaced in xenophobic incidents across South Africa. In their efforts to prevent further violence, government, international organisations, and civil society have been hampered by a lack of information on the frequency, location, and causes of such attacks. As a system for information collection, visualization and interactive mapping,Xenowatch will help to address those needs. Relying on crowdsourcing, the platform will allow anyone to freely report threats of violence, past attacks, or active mobilisation using Free SMSs, email or the website.

After verifying reports, Xenowatch will automatically notify the police, international organisations, and civil society of threats, violence, and displacement. By tracking threats, attacks, and responses, the platform will not only serve as an early warning system, but will help to assess the effectiveness of official responses and to identify the triggers of threats and violence.

The platform’s success depends on participation from residents and organisations across the country. To improve its effectiveness, the Xenowatch launch will include a presentation of the latest figures of xenophobic events across the country, a demonstration of the platform, and a discussion of its place in making South Africa a safer country for all who live in it.

Quakers say “no” to TTIP

On 20 May 2016 Ecclesia published an article that begins as follows:

“Five Quaker organisations from Europe and the United States have asked governments to say ‘no’ to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), the controversial ‘mega’ trade deal being negotiated between the European Union and the United States.

“It is the first time that Quaker organisations, working on both sides of the Atlantic, have spoken out together against such a trade treaty.”
